Penn Charter 9 - Episcopal 1
PC continued swinging the bats as the Quakers cruised to a 9-1 win over visiting Episcopal Academy. Aided by a strong 10 hit performance by the offense Senior captain Sean Rust recorded 8 strikeouts going the distance for the second time this season. Rust pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning. in the top of the third it looked like Episcopal had something going when a hard hit ball to freshman shortstop Mark Rhine was turned into a 6-4-3 double play. Rust was on cruse control from that point.
For PC the scoring started in the first inning when Senior captain Jim Entwisle led off the game with an infield hit. Two walks later and a fielders choice Entwisle scored the first PC run. The first inning ended with PC up 2-0. Episcopal got their lone run of the game in the top of the second to make the score 2-1 in favor of PC.
In the bottom of the second PC extended its lead to 4-1 on RBI singles by Juniors Billy Golman and Mike Basile.
In the bottom of the third Entwisle got his second hit of the game when he knocked in Soph. Ryan Wenger. Entwisle scored later in the inning on a bases loaded walk. The inning ended with PC up 7-1.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth when Wenger singled to left to bring home Rust to make the score 8-1. PC's final run came when Junior John Torrey smashed a shot over third that scored Junior Mario Incollingo who had led off the inning with a single.
With the win PC raises its record to 8-5-1 overall and evens its INTER-AC record to 3-3. The Quakers take on neighbor Germantown Friends School tomorrow at 12:00 in a non-league make up game.
GFS 10 - Penn Charter 2
GFS 10 - Penn Charter 2
Germantown Friends School (GFS) Foiled PC's bid for its first three game win streak of the 2006 season. GFS scored the first run of the game off PC starter Billy Goldman in the bottom of the first with back to back singles. In the bottom of the second a bases loaded single made the score 3-0 GFS. In the bottom of the third a lead off double, a walk and an error gave GFS their fourth run of the game. an outstanding play by PC Freshman catcher Doug Fleming prevented a fifth run and ended the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth Inning Jr. Tom Caramanico relived Goldman who gave a solid effort striking out five in three innings of work for PC.
The GFS starting pitcher was on cruise control pitching a no hitter into the fifth. With two outs it looked as though PC might finally be getting something going when Soph. Ryan Wenger and Freshman Mark Rhine both walked but the rally was thwarted and the inning ended with GFS still on top 4-0. With Caramanico retiring six straight PC finally broke through in the top of the sixth. With one out Sr.Captain Jim Entwisle walked and Jr. Mike Basile singled to left. Now with runners on first and second Goldman delivered a triple a bomb to deep right that scored Entwisle and Basile to make the score 4-2. Next was Freshman Robert Amaro who hit a smash to first. Surprisingly the GFS first basemen who was playing back came home with the ball and made a perfect throw to nip the speedy Goldman. The top of the sixth ended with GFS up 4-2 but it had seemed momentum had turned toward PC's favor. But in the bottom of the Sixth GFS answered the challenge. With the bases loaded and no one out a double in the right center gap cleared the bases and broke the game open for GFS 7-2. PC was still trying to hang in with the bases full of GFS Tigers again, but now with two outs when a ball was ripped into the right center gap. The ball rolled up a (Hill) in the outfield and while standing on the hill PC right fielder Ryan Wenger threw a strike to second basemen Jr. Mario Incollingo who threw a laser to third basemen Entwisle who put the tag on the runner for the third out (a pretty play) however the damage was done. GFS scored six runs in the inning and took a 10-2 lead.
Except for a hard single to centerfield by Mark Rhine PC went quietly in the seventh. With the non-league loss PC's record drops to 8-6-1. PC will play top ranked Chestnut hill on Tuesday at PC. in their last meeting Jr.Captain Mark Adzick pitched a near flawless game only to lose 1-0 on an unearned run. With Adzick the probable pitcher for Tuesday's key INTER-AC match-up it should be another dandy.
Penn Charter 6 - Chestnut Hill 5
Penn Charter 6 - Chestnut Hill 5
In a game that lived up to its billing, two of the area's top pitchers faced off in an important INTER-AC league game today at PC. In the first meeting back on April 11th, PC managed only one hit while CHA squeezed out a first inning unearned run that stood up to give CHA the 1-0. In that game area standout, PC Jr. Mark Adzick, pitched an absouloute gem, striking out ten CHA batters and allowing only two base runners. CHA, who itself has outstanding pitching, did PC one better that day getting the win and on its way to become the Philadelphia area's top rank team.
Today's game featured the same outstanding pitching, but with both teams breaking out the aluminum and in PC's case the leather! Three defensive gems turned out to be the difference as PC hung on to beat CHA 6-5.
CHA got on the board right away after their speedy lead off hitter walked on a 3-2 Curve that was so pretty it fooled the home plate umpire who called ball four. He then stole second, got to third on a fielders choice and scored on a single CHA 1-0. An error allowed another run and the top of the first ended 2-0 CHA.
In the bottom of the first Sr. Captain Jim Entwisle jumped all over a first pitch fast ball for a double. Jr. Billy Goldman reached on an error, Goldman promptly stole second and the ball sailed into center field for PC's first run. With two outs clean up hitter Frosh. Robert Amaro singled to tie the score 2-2. Amaro went 3-3 on the day with two big RBI's.
In the top of the second Adzick, the Jr. captain, worked out of trouble. With runners on second and third he struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
In the top of the third PC got the first of its three big defensive gems. With two outs Jr. second basemen Mario Incollingo ranging to his left made a full dive to knock the ball down, he got to his feet and threw the runner out for the last out of the inning.
In the bottom of the third with two outs PC manufactured a run to take the lead 3-2. Jr. Mike Basile walked, stole second and with his second hit and second RBI Amaro brought Basile home. PC 3-2
CHA tied the game in the top of the fourth with a lead off double and a single.
In the home half of the fourth, Sr. Captain Sean Rust, lead off with a sharp single to right (Soph. John Walton pinch ran). Soph. Ryan Wenger hit a ball up the middle that the CHA second basemen could not get out of his glove. With runners on second and third Frosh. Mark Rhine squared to bunt CHA called for a pitch out the ball was outside, Walton took off from second and no one was covering third. Rhine then bounced to second for the fielders choice RBI. and Walton scored PC was now up again
4-3.
4-3.
In the top of the fifth Frosh. catcher Doug Fleming, who is playing outstanding defense behind the plate, made a great fielding play for the first out. The second defensive gem for PC came with Entwisle taking a double away from CHA and then throwing across the diamond to nab the runner at first with a great tag by Amaro. The inning ended with Adzick's fifth strikeout.
In the bottom of the fifth Rust delivered his second hit of the day an RBI single to right field. Mike Carroll (pinch ran for Amaro who singled for the third time) Next was Wenger who crushed a double to left center and scored Rust all the way from first for PC's sixth run.
Leading 6-3 and with Adzick seemingly in control he notched his eighth strikeout for the first out. The second out came on a ground out to second. Good teams like CHA rarely go down without a fight and they were no exception. With an 0-2 count the CHA batter extended the at bat to nine pitches and ripping a single to center. Next up, the clean-up hitter drove a home run over the fence in right center. With momentum turning fast and PC now clinging to a 6-5 lead the next hitter for CHA hit a single to center. The tying run was now on base. The final and third PC defensive gem was made by right fielder Ryan Wenger. With the runner on first going, the CHA batter ripped the ball into the right field gap. Wenger got a good jump on the ball, had to lay out, which he did and made a diving catch to end the game and preserve the win for Adzick and PC.
This was a team win for PC. Pitching, hitting and defense. With the win, PC ups it's record to 4-3 in league play and 9-6-1 overall. PC meets the Haverford School on friday for an important league game.
Penn Charter 8 - Haverford School 4
PC won it's third consecutive league game with a win over Haverford School 8-4. PC broke out the bats again with a thirteen hit attack. Sr. Capt Jim Entwisle had two hits, Jr. Mario Incollingo had three hits, Fr. Robert Amaro had three hits in back to back games (swinging the hot bat 6-7 in the last two games) and Soph. Ryan Wenger who reached base in all four at bats including PC's first Home Run of the season. Launching a solo shot over the left field fence.
Sr. Capt. Sean Rust went six and two thirds and pitched well with four strikeouts. He made the tough pitches when he had too! Jr. Capt. Mark Adzick came in with the bases loaded to preserve the win for PC.
PC jumped on HS in the first inning. Entwisle singled to start the game and scored two batters later on an error to give PC the 1-0 lead.
PC extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when Rust led off with a single, Wenger walked. Fr. Doug Fleming laid down a beautiful bunt that was thrown into right field. Rust scored on the play. Incollingo got the first of his three hits hitting a hard single to score Wenger. In the bottom of the inning HS got on the board when a runner reached on an error, A single and a walk. The run was questionable because Fr. Mark Rhine (who continues to play a solid shortstop) took a bounding ball stepped on second and threw on to first where it appeared he had the runner but was called safe and a run scored. PC lead 3-1 at the end of two
It would stay that way until the top of the fifth when Amaro led off with his second single, Adzick and Wenger both walked to load the bases. Fleming then delivered what turned out to be the game winning hit. A solid smash up the middle scoring Amaro and Adzick to make it PC 5-1. Next was Incollingo who delivered his second hit and RBI of the game and Wenger scored to make the score 6-1. The final score of the inning came when Entwisle doubled to score fleming. PC 7-1. HS made some noise in the bottom of the fifth with a two run blast of their own, but PC still lead 7-3.
It would stay that way until the top of the seventh when Wenger lead off the inning with a deep home run to left to make the score 8-3 in favor of PC.
HS added a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-4 and that's the way it ended. With the win PC raises it's league record to 5-3 and stay's in the hunt for the INTER-AC championship 10-6-1 overall. PC plays two games tomorrow the first is at home against Central High and at 7:00 PC will visit Kennedy-Kendrick.
Penn Charter 9 - Central High 3
PC continued it's winning ways extending their win streak to three in a 9-3 win over visiting Central high school. Sr. Alec Hanna and Jr. Tom Caramanico combined for seven strikeouts allowing only one earned run. Once again PC broke the bats out early scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first. Fr. Mark Rhine had two hits in the first inning and Sr. Ted Decker had one. Central committed several errors opening the flood gates.
With the non-league win PC ups it's record to 11-6-1. The Quakers swing back into action tonight when they visit Norristown to play Kennedy-Kendrick.
Penn Charter 13 - Kennedy-Kendrick 5
For the third consecutive game PC jumped on top in the first inning. For the fourth consecutive game PC got a big win handing area power Kennedy-Kendrick a home loss 13-5 on Saturday night.
Starter Mike Carroll went a solid four innings for the win. Carroll who struck out four also made a great defensive play. In the bottom of the second, Carroll threw a wild pitch with a runner on third hustling Fr. Catcher Doug Fleming got to the ball the runner on third sprinted for home. Fleming threw a strike to a diving Carroll who made a sensational play. Jr. Billy Goldman relived Carroll to start the fifth. Goldman struck out two and allowed only one earned run in the final three innings.
In the PC first after back to back walks hot hitting (more on this later) Fr. Rob Amaro singled home Billy Goldman for the first run of the game. Next Jr. Mark Adzick bounced out to second to bring home Jr. Mike Basile to make the score 2-0 PC.
PC would extend its lead to 4-0 When Fr. Mark Rhine Jr. Mario Incollingo and Sr. Capt. Jim Entwisle all walked. Goldman hit a sac fly to center, and Incollingo scored on a wild pitch.
The top of the third started with an Amaro double. Soph. Ryan Wenger singled and Fleming knocked in Amaro with a sharp single to center to make the score 5-0 PC. Carroll worked out of a one out bases loaded jam giving up only one run. After three the score was 5-3. PC threatened again in the top of the fourth but Sr. Ted Decker was thrown out at home on a short single to left by Adzick. K-K's left fielder made a perfect throw. Things got interesting in the bottom of the fourth when K-K on the strength of a couple singles got the score back to 5-3 PC
PC once again answered with a rally of their own. Wenger led off the inning with what appeared to be a hit but was called out on a questionable call at first, (we still see the ray of light in the base ump) but PC pushed on with Fleming reaching on a walk, Rhine singled and Incollingo walked. Entwisle was hit by a pitch to make the score 6-3 PC. Goldman delivered a single scoring Rhine and Incollingo to blow it open 9-3. Next was that man again (Amaro) who delivered his second double of the game scoring Goldman to make the score 10-3 PC. In the home half the inning K-K scored two to get back 10-5.
PC extended it's lead once again in the top of the sixth. Wenger led off with a single to left (no question this time) Fleming walked and Rhine laid down a beautiful sac bunt to advance the runners. Incollingo brought Wenger in on a fielder’s choice 11-5 PC. Entwisle singled and then Goldman delivered a deep bomb to the right center gap for a stand-up triple. Fleming scored to make it a 12-5 game.
PC would notch one more to finish out a nice 13-5 victory. Extending it's win streak to four games with an overall record of 12-6-1. PC blasted 12 hits in the night cap of the day night double header. Robert Amaro who had his third 3 hit game in a week against quality opponents and is absolutely ripping the cover off the ball as clean-up hitter for the Quakers. If this was basketball season we could hear the Meeting House Mob chanting he is a FRESH-MEN. Rob is the son of former PC All-City stand out David Amaro who played baseball at Duke and in the minors with the Cubs organization. Nephew of Ruben Jr. Also a PC ALL-City stand out. Ruben played college ball at Stanford and played pro ball in the Phillies and Indians organizations before moving to the front office with the Phillies. Last but not least is Rob's grandfather Ruben Sr. who was a gold glover with the Phillies and just celebrated his fifty year anniversary in the organization. Rob has a younger brother Andrew in 7th grade at PC. Who surprise, surprise stars on the middle school team. (This has a familiar ring to it)
Coach Mellor has a young gritty team that is really starting to come together Offensively. We knew that the Pitching would be strong with the duo of Rust and Adzick, but offensively and defensively the Quakers have stepped up their game. It has been a great week for the boys from Penn Charter, Diving catches, pitching and big hits. This will be the week that settles the 2006 INTER-AC season. with a 5-3 league record PC will face league leading Malvern Prep on Tuesday and as Ted Silary put it the "Archest" of rivals Germantown Academy on Friday. Don't miss these!
Penn Charter 4 - Malvern Prep 3 (8 Innings)
PC extended it's winning streak to five games with an impressive 4-3 extra inning win at Malvern Prep. Jr. Capt. Mark Adzick pitched a beauty. Going the distance for the Quakers, who continue to march through the second half of the INTER-AC schedule.
Adzick, who struck out 11, while allowing only 2 walks in the 106 pitch outing was outstanding once again. MP one of the best hitting teams in the league brought a gaudy 24-6 league leading record into the game. The first inning was quiet for PC. In the bottom of the first Adzick worked out of a second and third jam. The first ended 0-0. PC got things going in the top of the second. Fr. Robert Amaro led off with a single. Adzick followed with a single. Sr. Capt Sean Rust laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Soph. Ryan Wenger delivered on a smash past the second basemen into centerfield to score Amaro and Adzick and PC jumped on top 2-0. Wenger moved to third when Fr. Doug Fleming reached on an error. MP got out of it when a hard hit ball to shortstop was turned into a double-play.
Things would stay that way until the bottom of the third when MP with runners on first and second. Adzick made is only mistake of the game leaving a change-up and the MP batter left no doubt for the 3 run home run to deep left. after three MP led 3-2.
As PC has in it's last five games they came right back. Adzick led off the top of the fourth with a shot to deep center that gave him a stand up triple. Rust promptly delivered a double scoring Adzick to tie the game at 3-3. Wenger was next and laid down PC's second perfect sac. bunt of the day moving pinch runner Jr. Tom Caramanico to third with one out, but PC could not get another run with Caramanico being forced at home.
That is the way it would stay until the extra frame, however it is note worthy to point out that Adzick got stronger as the game moved on. The bottom of the fifth was a seven pitch inning and the bottom of the sixth was an eight pitch inning.
The top of the eight started with a walk to Jr. Mike Basile after a fly-out Adzick (who seemed to be on base all game) walked. The next PC batter struck out. After working back from a 1-2 count Wenger drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Fleming followed he also worked the count and on a 2-2 pitch the ball kicked off the catchers glove, and the speedy Basile raced home from third with the go ahead run PC 4-3. In the bottom of the eighth Adzick closed it out with a fly out, and two ground outs to third. PC and Adzick had it's impressive win 4-3.
With the win PC ups it's record to 13-6-1 overall with a league of 6-3. PC will take on Germantown Academy on Friday at GA. PC continues it's quest to win the INTER-AC championship and defend their crown.
Germantown Academy 8 - Penn Charter 0
PC failed to win it's sixth straight today with an 8-0 loss to league rival Germantown Academy. It had all the makings of a great one. PC was held to one hit and only two base runners for the game. Starting PC pitcher struck out five allowing no walks through six innings.
With the score 0-0 PC got it's only hit by Fr. Mark Rhine. The hit was immediately erased by a 1-6-3 double play (pitcher to short to first) In the bottom of the inning GA got on the board with a one out double and a sharp single to center.
GA scored two more in the bottom of the fourth Extending it's lead to 3-0 on back to back singles and a double.
In the bottom of the fifth GA got things going again. After two outs a double, single and error set the stage for a three run home run to left. After five GA led 8-0.
The top of the sixth started with Soph. Ryan Wenger reaching on an error. Once again the PC runner was immediately erased with a 5-4-3 double play. (third to second to first)
To GA's credit their pitching and defense was superb. PC could not get anything going offensively. Rust pitched well early but it was not PC's day. With the loss PC's record drops to 13-7-1 and 6-4 in the INTER-AC. PC's bid to share the INTER-AC crown faded with the loss. It will now come down to Malvern Prep and GA. PC can still finish second.
PC's next game is at home tomorrow against Roman Catholic. Unless PC has a home game in states it will be the last home game for PC's five seniors
Roman 7 - Penn Charter 5
Senior day at PC was spoiled by the rain and a 7-5 loss to Visiting Roman Catholic. It looked as though it would be a picture perfect day for the five PC seniors Andrew Baldridge, Ted Decker, Alec Hanna, and Captains Jim Entwisle and Sean Rust. But unfortunately the clouds and Roman raid on their parade in perhaps their last game at Ralph Palia field.
Jr. Mike Carroll Pc's starting pitcher got out of a second and third jam in the top of the first. In the home half the inning Rust drew a two out walk to get things going next was Alec Hanna who hit a hard single to left. Following Hanna Andrew Baldridge affectionately know by the nick name (baldi) got the first hit of the day for PC a hard single up the middle. Baldridge had an outstanding day going three for three. And gave PC the early 1-0 lead driving in Rust. Fr. Doug Fleming hit a shot to right for a single but the bases were left loaded with Quakers after a strikeout to end the inning.
The bottom of the second Jr. Billy Goldman walked, and then stole second Entwisle scored Goldman on a single to center. Decker singled to knock in Entwisle. Decker was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning. PC was up 3-1
In the top of the third error's and walks would do in the Quakers. Two walks and an error would load the bases and then another error would that should have been an inning ending double play allowed two runs to score to tie the game. A single and another infield error extended Romans lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the third Baldridge led off with his second hit of the day, Fleming followed with a single and it looked like the Quakers were in business. The inning ended with a pop-up, Fielders choice and a ground out.
It looked as though Roman could blow the game open with two walks and a single and a 7-3 lead. Alec Hanna entered the game to relieve Carroll with one out and the bases loaded. He immediately got a line out and a strikeout to end the threat. In the home half of the inning Entwisle reached on an error, Decker and Rust both reached on infield hits. It was the second hit of the day for Decker and an RBI for Rust scoring Entwisle. Next Baldridge continued his hot day and delivered his third hit and second RBI of the day. The inning ended with PC down 7-5.
The top half of the fifth was quick work for Hanna with an inning ending double play. Fr. Mark Rhine to Jr. Mario Incollingo to Fr. Robert Amaro. 6-4-3. The home half the inning started out with Rhine hitting a sharp single to center. Soph. Ryan Wenger reached on a fielder’s choice. Entwisle walked, Wenger moved up on a passed ball and then tried to take home on a passed ball and was thrown out at the plate. The batter struk-out and Roman was out of the inning.
Tom Caramanico relived Hanna and struck out two on his way to a one-two-three inning. The Quakers would not get another chance. The skies open up and the rains poured down over Ralph Palia field. After a twenty minute rain delay the umpires called the game. The loss (PC's second straight) dropped the Quakers record to 13-8-1. It is certainly note worthy to mention that the seniors came to play on senior day. Sean Rust reached base twice with an RBI, Jim Entwisle reached base three times, Alec Hanna pitched very well in two innings of work, Ted Decker had two hits and an RBI, and Andrew Baldridge had an outstanding day going three for three with two RBI's. If this was the last time these seniors play on their home field they went out playing very well.
LaSalle 9 - Penn Charter 0
Jr. Capt. Mark Adzick pitched three scoreless innings allowing only two hits four strikeouts and no walks. PC was held to just four hits on the day. Two singles by Jr. Billy Goldman a double by Sr. Capt Jim Entwisle and a single by Fr. Catcher Doug Fleming. Due to rain PC has not played a game in seven days and it showed offensively. Also credit must go to LaSalle who used six different pitchers. All of whom pitched well.
LaSalle scored their first run in the bottom of the fourth and added four more in the bottom of the fifth and matched it by adding four more in the bottom of the sixth. PC pitchers walked seven LaSalle hitters in the final three frames.
With the loss PC finishes the regular season with a record of 13-9-1. States start Tuesday at home for the Quakers where they will face The George School. at 3:45.
Penn Charter 5 - The George School 0
PC advanced to the second round of the Private School State Play-Offs with a 5-0 win over the George School. Sr. Capt Sean Rust was masterful pitching the complete game shut out. Rust struck out six while walking only two.
The defense stepped up to help rust. With two out and two on Soph. Ryan Wenger made the first of two all out diving catches. Saving at least one run and ending The George Schools only legitimate threat at scoring in the game.
After a lead-off walk A hard hit ball to second basemen Jr. Mario Incollingo was turned into a pretty 4-6-3 double play. The bottom of the sixth ended with Wenger making his second diving catch of the day. After a long run into foul territory Wenger made the head first all out dive to make the grab.
The hitting star's for the Quakers were Jr. Billy Goldman Fr. Doug Fleming, and Sr. Capt Jim Entwisle. Goldman was two for three with a single and double and two RBI's. Fleming reached based in all three at bat's with two singles and was hit by a pitch. Entwisle was two for three with an RBI. Fr. Mark Rhine, and Wenger added singles.
The win sets up a match-up with Inter-AC league rival Germantown Academy Thursday at GA. PC dropped both games with GA this season 3-1 and 8-0.
Penn Charter 3 - Germantown Academy 1
Three times was not the charm for Germantown Academy.
PC and starting pitcher Jr. Captain Mark Adzick end GA’s season in a hard fought game at GA. Adzick one of nations top recruits continued to impress all who see the 6’4 170lb Jr. southpaw. Striking out ten and giving up one hit that took a crazy hop on the dry field over Shortstop Fr. Mark Rhine’s head. Adzick who reached ninety on the radar gun is not just a young man who throws hard with an array of pitches but shows the type of grit, determination and poise that one usually sees is a major leaguer. He is an unflappable pitcher that leads by example.
PC got right to work on a GA starter who also pitched well. Sr. Captain Jim Entwisle reached on a hard hit ball to second that was scored an error. Soph. Ryan Wenger laid down a nice sac. That allowed Entwisle to move to second. Jr. Billy Goldman hit a high chop of the infield (which was like cement) because of the lack of rain. That was missed played by GA’s second basemen. Allowing Entwisle to score and giving PC a 1-0 lead. Other than a Single by Fr. Doug Fleming and Rhine getting hit with a pitch the second was quiet for both teams.
Goldman had his second of the day and Fr. Robert Amaro singled but the threat ended with a fly out to right. Adzick fanned all three GA batters in the bottom of the third inning.
PC got back on the board and extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth. Adzick helped his own cause by singling to right. Sr. Ted Decker was the courtesy runner. Fleming laid down a great sac. Bunt moving Decker to second. Rhine bounced out to second and moved Decker to third. Jr. Mike Basile hit a hard ball to first that dropped and PC had its second run. GA got something going in the bottom of the fourth two hit batters and a walk loaded the bases with no one out. Adzick Struck out the next batter for the first out of the inning. The Next hitter hit a bloop to center that looked as though it would fall for a hit but centerfielder Billy Goldman made a big boy play a great diving grab to take away the hit. The GA runner tagged and scored. It appeared the runner left third early but the PC appeal was denied. With the score now 2-1 PC Adzick overpowered and then dropped a beautiful curve in for the strike to end the inning.
The top of the fifth started with a walk to Wenger but a fly out and a double play erased the inning. Adzick cruised through the bottom of the inning 1-2-3.
Once again the PC led off the inning with a base runner when Sr. Capt Sean Rust led off with a single, but was erased by a crazy interference call on his way to second. In the bottom of the sixth the first two GA batters reached on errors. Adzick once again closed the door and shut down GA. The inning ended with PC still in front 2-1.
PC got a big insurance run in the top of the seventh. With two out Entwisle singled and Wenger reached when the GA infielder bobbled the ball. Next was Goldman who delivered his second RBI of the day. Adzick who looked as fresh in the seventh as he had in the first fanned two of three GA batters he saw to the end the game. PC had its impressive 3-1 win over GA.
The win gives PC the right to meet Malvern Prep in the PA state semi final. The game will be played this Saturday May 27 at the Perkiomen School at 3:00. PC split with Malvern during the season.
Malvern 12 - Penn Charter 2
Malvern Prep was not to be denied as it over powered PC in the PA state semi-final at The Perkiomen School. Malvern pounded the ball early and often in route to invoke the ten run rule in the fifth inning. PC who left ten runners on base in five innings got things going early.
Sr. Capt Jim Entwisle who went 3-3 in his final appearance as a Quaker, singled to led off the game. Jr. Mike Basile scorched a double to left center. Entwisle came around to score to give PC a 1-0 lead. Jr. Billy Goldman (who was the PC starting pitcher) Walked. Fr. Basile took third on a passed ball. Next was Fr. Robert Amaro who scored Basile on a bounce out to shortstop. Amaro was safe at first on an error. After a strikeout Fr. Doug Fleming worked a walk, and both Fleming and Amaro moved up to second and third on another passed ball. The inning ended for PC on the second strikeout of the inning stranding the PC runners.
Malvern started the hit parade with a lead off home run. A walk and a single was followed by a double and another single. The inning ended with a nice Fr. Mark Rhine to Jr. Mario Incollingo to Amaro 6-4-3 double play, but the damage had been done and Malvern was on top 4-2.
The top of the second started well for PC with a lead off single by Incollingo and the second single of the day by Entwisle. Both runners moved up to second and third when a pick off attempt sailed past the Malvern first baseman. With no outs the next batter was Basile who hit a shallow fly to center that was caught and turned into a double play with a perfect throw from the Malvern centerfielder to nail Incollingo at home. The next PC batter struckout to end the threat.
PC looked as though it had something going again in the top of third when Amaro and Fleming both walked and Sr. Capt Sean Rust singled with one out to load the bases, but once again PC couldn't deliver the hit it needed to get back in the game. A strikeout and foul pop up to the second basemen spoiled the would be rally. In the bottom of the inning Malvern extended it's lead to 6-2 with three straight hits to start the inning. PC almost wiggled off the hook throwing a runner out at home but when a ball bounced off the third basemen's glove and into leftfield the runner came home to score . A sac fly to center allowed the second run of the inning.
PC could not get anything going stranding four more runners over the next two innings.
Jr. Mike Carroll relieved Goldman to start the bottom of the fifth. Malvern continued to smoke the baseball scoring six more runs and ending the game 12-2. Rust relived Carroll but faced only one batter who he got out on a fielders choice but the twelfth run scored on the play and put an end to the Quakers season.
Malvern went on to beat Mercersburg in the Championship 6-3. Mercersburg beat Perkiomen for the right to meet Malvern in the final.
PC's final 2006 season record is 15-10. 6-4 in the Inter-Ac. A good record in a league that the Harrisburg Patriot newspaper calls the best baseball league in PA and maybe the northeast. First we wish all the seniors players a heart felt congratulations on a fine four years at PC and a fine senior year. The five seniors and where they are attending school are as follows:
Ted Decker Susquehanna University, Alec Hanna Muhlenberg College, Sr. Capt Jim Entwisle Williams College, Andrew Baldridge Lafayette College, Sr. Capt Sean Rust Temple. Each one of these student athlete's are great young men and are now and forever part of Penn Charter baseball history.
