Coach Mellor grew up in Schwenksville, PA. He attended Penn Charter beginning in 9th grade and graduating in 1969. Mellor then matriculated to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1973. At Penn Coach Mellor played one year of Freshman Football before lettering the next 3 years as a Varsity Player. He began his teaching career at Penn Charter in January of 1975 where he coached football at the Varsity level that fall. Coach Mellor began coaching Varsity Baseball in 1979. Since that time Coach Mellor has outstanding overall record of 355-149 and a winning percentage of .704%. His winning is a true testament to his personal philosophy which is “to teach the fundamentals from A to Z and take what the opposing team gives you.”

“Our pitching should keep us in most games. We need to play solid defense and be smart when running the bases. We will be a very young and inexperienced team that must mature quickly this spring.”

He then coached Football at Father Judge in 2000 and 2001. In the Fall of 2002 he came to Penn Charter where he began coaching football before becoming the Pitching Coach in 2003. Gerry is happily married to his wife Annette of 34 years. They have 3 sons- Matthew, Patrick (OPC ’98) and Gerry (OPC ’02)

On working with Coach Mellor: “Working with Coach Mellor has been a great learning experience. His attention to detail has rubbed off on the staff and will eventually rub off on the players.”

Coaching Philosophy: “I believe teaching is the critical element of any sport, especially baseball. Allowing the boys to have some fun as they learn is equally critical.”

“Pitching is our strong point with veteran starters and relievers. We are very young but our young guys will grow up fast. They are solid baseball players, but inexperienced at this level. If we score some runs, I fully expect our pitching staff will lead us to a successful season. Our league is always the toughest in the Philadelphia Area. There are no easy wins. Our non-league schedule is the toughest I’ve seen with games scheduled against every Catholic League Playoff team, as well as Suburban Powers. This will only help us as well as our Florida trip for Spring Training.”

Mike Ryan

4 years at Penn Charter

Coach Ryan hails from Exton, PA where he attended Malvern Prep. Ryan then moved onto college at Widener University where he graduated in 2005. He joined the Penn Charter baseball team in 2003 and has enjoyed the experience greatly.

“The 2006 Penn Charter Baseball Team returns a solid nucleus. There are a number of young players that will contribute to the success of this years team. I look forward to working with the players, developing their skills in order to achieve the goals set forth for the 2006 team.”
